How to Spend the Perfect Evening in Edinburgh

Welcome to magnificent Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland; a contemporary metropolis which has every modern amenity whilst maintaining its enchanting historical charm. A large and ancient city where the arts rule the land and one of the most famous festivals in the world takes place.

It’s a city with a lot of choice, so we have put together this guide to help you spend the perfect night in Edinburgh, sampling as many of its delights as possible.

Early evening

When the sun begins to set, this magical city sparkles. Start an evening’s exploring at Carlton hill, taking in panoramic views of the picture-perfect skyline, which includes the imposing Edinburgh Castle.

Another place of outstanding beauty is the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Arts. The grounds are superb, and the awe-inspiring neo-classical building will have you reaching for your camera.

Cocktail hour

After a stroll, it’s time to check our Edinburgh’s fabulous bars and savour an aperitif. As Scotland’s national drink is Scotch Whisky, it would be rude not to sample one or two in the single malt motherland.

For the discerning whisky fans, there is the Bow Bar, Teuchter’s Bar, and the Whiski Rooms. Each of these establishments has hundreds of scotch whiskies for you to try, neat or in a variety of mouth-watering cocktails put together by passionate mixologists.

For those of you who would prefer a non-scotch-based tipple, there are a number of award-winning cocktail bars in the city that serve enticing and innovative beverages in gorgeous settings.

Showtime

A night out in Edinburgh without seeing a show would be a travesty, when there is so much world-class theatre and comedy on offer. Immerse yourself in dramatic and musical performances that will stay with you long after you leave this mesmerising city.

Edinburgh Festival Theatre on Nicolson Street is the largest venue in the city with a thrilling calendar of dramatic, musical, and dance performances from world famous troupes and groups. It’s also a prime venue for many of the legendary Edinburgh Fringe Festival’s biggest events.

There are also many first-rate shows on at the King’s Theatre, which you won’t want to miss when you’re in town. Featuring drama, ballet, musical theatre, and more, take a look at what’s on in the coming months.

Dinner time

After a good show, there’s nothing better than heading out for a sumptuous feast to discuss what you’ve just been to see with your companions.

Over in New Town, just a stone’s throw from glorious Edinburgh Castle and the greenery of Princes Street Gardens, you will find Côte Brasserie Edinburgh. Here you can relax in the cosy bistro atmosphere and tuck into French-inspired classic dishes that will transport you to the brasseries of Paris.

Try a signature Kir Royale before tucking into a plate of smoked salmon rillettes, traditional Poulet chasseur or roasted pork belly, accompanied by a succulent wine from our expansive wine list.

Our desserts and cheeses are extremely popular and will finish your meal in the best way possible. The crème caramel and chocolate fondant are particular crowd-pleasers.

Then why not sip a coffee or digestif on our al fresco terrace, where you can watch the world go by and reflect on an evening well spent!

Après

If you have any stamina left after such a lavish evening, the city’s nightclubs are great for dancing, people watching or having a nightcap.

Local favourites include Cabaret Voltaire in the vaults under North Bridge, as well as the Jazz Club and Sneaky Pete’s. For those who want to party until late, head to Lulu or the Liquid Room.

The Fringe has undoubtedly contributed to Edinburgh’s cultural identity, but either way, it’s a truly delightful city to explore day or night, so be sure to soak up every moment of your visit.
